HOST EDDY MATTHYS - GUIDED WALK
Shortly after the Second World War, the border area with the Netherlands was the terrain of many smugglers, who mainly transferred butter to Belgium. Their infamous stories are at the heart of this Butter Smuggling Walk. In a drop-off, which you can book either during the day or in the evening, you will relive the smuggling past. Walk the country roads, outwit the customs officers and immerse yourself in the world of real smugglers. The guide will tell you all about their tricks and games and show you images of the risky life back then. The whole 8-9 km tour is divided into 3 different sections, with draft techniques leading you to a checkpoint. There you will be offered further and further sections of the story and a themed snack and drink.

- As start and end points are not in the same place, it is requested that the groups be divided into cars and taken to the starting points of the drop. Afterwards, drivers will be brought to the spot.

Whisper silently through the beautiful Zwin region. You are given a 32 km route that takes you to ‘Het Klinket’. A beautiful organic arable farm where hospitality comes first. Here you visit the agricultural museum, where you get a good impression of agriculture and its importance in the region then and now.
Of course, the inner man is not forgotten. At noon, you will be offered a delicious lunch consisting of a twelve-hour snack: a cup of soup, a croquette and a choice between a healthy sandwich or a sandwich (drinks not included). Afterwards, you get back on your vehicle and head through the beautiful polders to the Groene Polderwinkel. A family business at heart where (h)honest products come first. Natascha and Hendrien Dekker are happy to welcome you to their farm shop full of fresh (local) delicacies. Homemade jam, syrup, juices, potatoes and vegetables from their own or fellow farmers' land and meat from their own livestock, you will find everything. Saturday 28/09: Guided cycling tour ‘Liberation of the border region’ (1-4pm)
The bicycle tour crosses the border area where, along the Leopold Canal and in the villages, the battle between the Canadians and Germans took place during the Second World War. In this area, inundations took place, bunkers were built and residents were forced to evacuate.
Saturday 12/10 - Guided cycle tour ‘Liberation of the Municipality of Sluis’ (1-4pm)
The bike tour goes through the polder area where evacuated people were accommodated on farms during World War II. Oostburg and Sluis will be visited, including in Oostburg a visit to the post-war command post ‘Bunker Grote Beer’ and in Sluis the places where Jews were temporarily sheltered during the war.

Experience the history of Aardenburg and take part in the guided walk themed ‘Traces of WWII in Aardenburg’. Walk past places where serious events took place during World War II, destruction was caused, residents and refugees sought shelter, the wounded were cared for, deaths occurred and even children were born. Although the wounds of war seem healed and repaired in human and material terms, traces and remnants from that time of occupation and liberation remain.

Experience the history of Aardenburg at the Roman Museum. Your visit starts with coffee/tea and a Zeeland Bolus. Then a guide will take you through the museum to tell you more about the Roman settlement in Aardenburg and how the soldiers and civilians lived there. The story is visualised with archaeological finds found in Aardenburg. After the museum visit, you can take part in a guided city walk past historical buildings and places that tell the history of Aardenburg from 7000 years ago to the present day.

Walter Dierick tells how he experienced World War II as a schoolboy during the lecture ‘Aardenburg: War and Liberation’. His father was part of the Air Guard Corps in 1939-1940 and this is how he experienced mobilisation. The country was overrun and the first bombs fell on Aardenburg. During the war, he kept his eyes and ears open. The events of September-October 1944 are etched in his memory. On 19 October 1944, he went along to bring in the Canadians via the Eedeweg.

Admire the fascinating photo exhibition ‘Second World War in colour’. For a four-part book series, colourist Jakob Lagerweij coloured black-and-white photos from the Second World War. While the black-and-white photos in the many image banks show the bleakness of the war, Lagerweij's coloured-in photos bring the war closer. The colour photo is likely to hold the viewer's gaze longer. Jakob Lagerweij's work features texts by journalists Ad van Liempt, Jaap Visser and Matty Verkamman.
