Duindoornbes praline

Chocolatier M - Duindoornbes praline

Isabel and David Maenhout are expert chocolatiers with two shops selling hand-made chocolates in Knokke-Heist (from 2005) and Het Zoute (from 2007). The many delicious creations, with which they tempt us, include their famous pralines (soft-centred Belgian-style chocolates).

Duindoornbes means the ‘berry’ (bes) of the duindoorn (a coastal shrub known in English as the common sea-buckthorn). These shrubs are a typical feature of the dune landscape in the Zwin region and can be found all along the North Sea coast. Their characteristic orange berries are well known for being very healthy (they are packed with vitamin C) and have a distinctive taste that is tangy and with a hint of spices. The juice is an orangey-yellow colour. In the hands of top-chocolatier David Maenhout of Chocolatier M, they are paired with delicious dark Belgian chocolate and become the perfect ingredient for his exquisite hand-made speciality chocolates.
